ABOUT

vngel (stylized in all lowercase and pronounced as “angel”) started as a passion project for undergraduate college student Brettan O’Beirne who wasn’t ready to face the real world.

Before attending college at Virginia Tech, O’Beirne grew up completely enveloped in music, her number one passion. What started off as learning the lyrics to entire songs at the age of two eventually progressed into singing in elementary school talent shows. From there, O’Beirne began guitar lessons at the age of twelve, participated in middle school choir, and auditioned for the television music competition called the “X Factor”. In high school, she expanded the range of her performance passions by participating in show choir and theater, adding more styles of vocal music to her repertoire as well as picking up some minor dance skills.

Ultimately, reality caused her dreams to come to a screeching halt when she was faced with the choice to attend music school at Belmont University or take the “realistic” path of pursuing a BS in Animal Sciences (Pre-Veterinary Option) at Virginia Tech. As a Virginia Tech student, O’Beirne briefly participated in an acapella group, but mostly clung to dancing as a primary outlet while she wrestled with the thoughts of giving up on her music making dreams in order to solidify a decent future for herself. Even as she attempted to tell herself to forget about her former life goals, a persistent desire ate at her.

When the COVID-19 pandemic struck the United States, O’Beirne found herself stuck at home in online classes and unable to dance - so, she turned back to what she loved most - singing. In 2020, she began posting to YouTube under the cover artist moniker of “VOID Angel”. After teaching herself how to audio mix and master using Adobe Audition, she slowly became less content with covering other people’s songs and wanted to create her own. Moving forward, O’Beirne decided to create her official artist name, vngel, which pays homage to her YouTube cover artist name as well as her go-to gaming username.

Fusing together inspiration from her favorite artists as well as her own life, vngel emerged as a sigh of relief at the end of O’Beirne’s undergraduate days. Citing influence from Evanescence frontwoman Amy Lee, Stevie Nicks, Adele, keshi, Joji, and Billie Eilish, O’Beirne hopes to utilize her passion to help others express the emotions that music has helped her express.
